From Backyard Movies to Independent Features: The Evolution of AJ Epyx Productions

How do you go from making movies in your backyard to producing award-winning independent feature films? On Episode 04 of Behind the Production, hosts André Joseph and Albert Albanese take a trip down memory lane to explore how their filmmaking process has evolved since the early days of AJ Epyx Productions on Staten Island. From shooting homemade movies with limited equipment, small crews, and big ambitions to tackling full-length feature films with professional actors, larger production teams, and international distribution, André and Albert reflect on the creative and technical lessons that shaped their journey. They discuss the evolution of their writing, directing, cinematography, editing, and overall approach to storytelling, along with the growing pains, unexpected challenges, and hard-earned experiences that helped transform a backyard filmmaking passion into an established independent production company. It’s an honest, entertaining conversation about learning by doing, adapting to new technology, making mistakes, and never losing the creative spark that started it all. Because every filmmaker starts somewhere, and sometimes the biggest lessons come from the smallest productions!
