Booker T. Gibson: A Teacher’s Journey

We produced this short documentary in 2013 about the extraordinary life of Booker T. Gibson. He was first African-American teacher at South Junior-Senior High School in Valley Stream where he taught music for three decades. This is an inspiring story about a talented piano player, Air Force veteran, and loving husband and father who overcame racial barriers to become one of the most beloved teachers in the Long Island community.

Mr. Gibson passed away on March 10 of this year at age 85. Myself and Reginald Brown who had introduced me to him dedicate this project in his memory. Special thank you to Ann Parry, Emily Schreiber, and the Gibson family for the photographs provided in the video.
